Welcome, and thank you for visiting.
I'm Matthew Cavanagh, the artist and owner behind California Artworks.
I've been designing and painting murals professionally since 2009, working with schools, cities, businesses, developers and organizations throughout California and beyond.
My work ranges from large-scale exterior murals and public art projects to school campuses, hospitality environments and commercial spaces. While the subject and style change from project to project, my approach stays consistent: understand the space, understand the people who use it, and create something that feels like it belongs there.
I personally handle each project from initial concept and design through final installation. That direct involvement allows me to maintain the original vision throughout the process while also managing the practical realities of working on active campuses, public spaces and commercial properties.
I'm also a licensed California painting contractor, fully bonded and insured, with more than 15 years of experience taking projects from an empty wall to completed artwork.

California has shaped both my life and my work. I grew up in Big Bear Lake, studied at Sacramento State and the San Diego Art Institute, then spent years working in San Diego before eventually settling in Temecula, California.
That connection to the state and the enormous variety of landscapes, communities and cultures within it continues to influence the artwork I create.
